Woo, Hyowon (우효원, b. 1973)

Hyo-Won Woo has emerged as a leading voice in contemporary choral music. Her innovative works blend traditional Korean elements with Western techniques, spanning unaccompanied choral pieces, large-scale cantatas, spatial music, and unique compositions exploring human connections.
From 1996 to 2014, she served as composer-in-residence for both the Seoul Ladies’ Singers and the Incheon City Chorale under Hak-Won Yoon, paving a groundbreaking path for Korean choral music. She has also been commissioned by the National Chorus of Korea and the Korean National Symphony Orchestra, with her works performed at major events like the ACDA National Conference and the IFCM Choral Symposium.
A dedicated educator, Woo has taught at Korean universities and the Chorus Center Academy in Seoul. She was also a visiting fellow at the University of Michigan. Renowned for her artistic vision and expertise, she is frequently invited as a jury member and music director at international festivals. Her compositions are published by Walton Inc., Hal Leonard, Hinshaw Music, Éditions À Coeur Joie, and the Seoul Chorus Center.
