Kook, Hyun (국 현, b. 1967)

Dr. Hyun Kook, MD, PhD, graduates from Chonnam National University Medical School, Korea, where he is currently a professor and manages research grants targeting heart diseases. Recognized for his scientific contributions, he is a distinguished member of both the Korean Academy of Sciences and Technology and the National Academy of Medicine of Korea. Although without formal music training, since 2005, Dr. Kook has built a significant reputation in choral composition, both in Korea and internationally. His vocal pieces have been recorded on 23 albums. In 2023, his 'Libera me' and 'Missa Brevis' were recorded by Kantorei Minnesota (conductor: Adam Reinwald) and released as an online album. Notably, his pieces, Suri Suri Masuri (earthsongs) and Dara Dara Balgeun Dara (Walton), were showcased by the Dortmund Youth Choir (Konzertchor 2 der Akademie für Gesang NRW, conductor: Narae Joung Davutovic), during their winning performance at Deutscher Chorwettbewerb 2023. His Missa Brevis für Kinderchor was premiered at Köln Dom in June 2023, commissioned and performed by the same choir. His Cantate Domino (Walton) was also premiered at St. Marco Cathedral at Venice with the conductor Marius Popp. Among almost 400 compositions, near 50 were published by leading U.S. publishers including Hal Leonard, Lorenz, earthsongs, GIA, Galaxy, Santa Barbara Music Publishing, Pavane, Roger Dean, Heritage, Hinshaw, Colla Voce, SheetMusicPlus, MusicSpoke, and Walton, his musical influence continues to expand. Recently his works were accepted at Oxford University Press and Alliance.
