Cho, HyeYoung (조혜영, b. 1969)
Composer Cho Hye-young, who graduated from the Composition Department and Graduate School of Hanyang University, has been close to choral music since childhood through activities such as church choirs and university amateur choirs. After graduating from university, she worked in various fields such as contemporary music and electronic music, and began to pursue choral composition in earnest since 2006 when she started publishing sacred choral music.
In 2009, she received a commission from the National Chorus of Korea, which marked the start of her career as a choral composer. In 2012, she participated in the Choral Composition Symposium hosted by Joseph M. Martin in Atlanta, USA, and won the composition award. In 2014, her commissioned work, "Te Deum" for large orchestra, was performed at the opening concert of the World Symposium on Choral Music (WSCM) held in Seoul.
Her works have been performed at the Barcelona World Symposium on Choral Music and various international choral competitions and concerts since 2017. She served as the former commissioned composer for the Ansan Municipal Chorus and National Chorus of Korea, and the commissioned composer for the Chuncheon Municipal Chorus, Ulsan Municipal Chorus, Daejeon Municipal Chorus, Yongin Youth Chorus, and Cheongju Municipal Chorus. She also served as the President of the Korean Choral Composition Association (KCCA).
Currently, she works as the resident composer for the Incheon City Chorale and serves as a standing director of the KCCA. She has also taught at Hanyang University, Konkuk University, and Kangwon National University. Her accomplishments include the 1992 Chosun Ilbo New Music Competition, the 2009 Korea Creative Choral Festival Composition Award, and various commissioned works for choruses in cities such as Daejeon, Anyang, Ansan, Ulsan, Wonju, Incheon, and Chuncheon.
